I said: “I have a business … I’m the CEO of my origination business!”
He said: “You are also the processor, the marketing assistant, the copyboy, and the janitor! That is NOT a business, it’s a J.O.B.!”
(That’s Just Over Broke for those of you who don’t know the joke).
And you know what … he was right!
Even with an assistant, I was still doing too much “in” my business rather than working “on” my business.
Work “On” Rather Than “In” Your Business
This is a key distinction: When you work on a business, you are helping it to grow. When you work in a business, you are barely keeping it alive.

Before you say something silly like: “Heck, Craig … two tenths of a percent isn’t very much!” Stop and think for a moment …
- In commercial lending you deal with loans in excess of $1,000,000 on a daily basis.
